Lynette Ong

Lynette H. Ong is a Professor of Political Science at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto, and a Senior Fellow at the Asia Society’s Center for China Analysis. She is an expert on China and Southeast Asia (Singapore and Malaysia). She is the author of three books: Outsourcing Repression: Everyday State Power in Contemporary China, which has won multiple accolades from various disciplinary associations; The Street and the Ballot Box: Interactions Between Social Movements and Electoral Politics in Authoritarian Contexts; and, Prosper or Perish: Credit and Fiscal Systems in Rural China.

Lynette has delivered expert testimonies before the US Congress’ US-China Economic and Security Review Commission and Canada’s House of Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations on numerous occasions. Her research has been covered in The Economist, New York Times, New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. Her research lies at the intersection of authoritarian politics, contentious politics, and the political economy of development.
