For over 30 years, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit  has been the premier business event in the Asia Pacific. In 2024, it will be held in Lima, Peru from November 13th to 15th, bringing together over 1,000 C-level executives, thought leaders and government representatives under this year’s theme, "People, Business, Prosperity."

À propos du projet

Pour les habitants du Myanmar, l’histoire de la communauté rohingya a été, au mieux, remise en question, et au pire – et en réalité – purement et simplement rejetée. Une grande partie de l’histoire visuelle des Rohingyas a été perdue, confisquée ou détruite au cours des vagues de violence, de déplacement forcé et de génocide des 60 dernières années. Cette destruction se poursuit encore aujourd’hui. Ces événements ont gravement compromis la façon dont les Rohingyas préservent et partagent leur mémoire collective, leur identité et leur histoire avec les autres.

Fin 2021, plusieurs années après que les violences génocidaires aient forcé trois quarts de million de Rohingyas à fuir au Bangladesh, le projet Ek Khaale a été lancé par le photojournaliste Greg Constantine. Ek Khaale, en rohingya, signifie « Il était une fois Â». Il s’agit d’un projet collaboratif et coparticipatif de narration et de restauration visuelle. Il a été lancé en collaboration avec les Rohingyas dans les camps de réfugiés au Bangladesh, et avec ceux qui vivent encore en Birmanie et au sein de la diaspora aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni, au Canada, en Malaisie et en Europe.

En collaboration avec des jeunes et des aînés de la communauté rohingya, le projet cherche des documents visuels historiques que les Rohingyas ont miraculeusement conservés, en secret, pendant des années (souvent à grand risque personnel) ou récupérés et transportés avec eux dans des circonstances inimaginables. Les photographies anciennes, les collections familiales, les documents, les lettres et les illustrations fournis par les Rohingyas sont combinés à des documents historiques provenant de diverses archives publiques et privées. Ces souvenirs de famille et ces preuves d’existence historique en tant que communauté ont été éparpillés partout dans le monde, tout comme la communauté rohingya. 

Ce projet rassemble ces documents et ces histoires du passé et leur donne vie à nouveau. En exposant ce passé inconnu, ce projet vise à présenter un portrait visuel des Rohingyas que la plupart des gens n’ont jamais vus auparavant. Il remet également en question les récits et reconstitue ce que les régimes birmans et d’autres communautés ont passé des décennies à essayer de détruire.

Greg Constantine parlera de l’histoire de ce projet révolutionnaire et de son importance pour la communauté rohingya, de plusieurs des découvertes les plus importantes des trois dernières années et des histoires qui y sont liées. 

À propos de Greg Constantine

Greg Constantine est un photojournaliste documentaire et auteur primé. Il a consacré sa carrière à des projets indépendants à long terme qui explorent le chevauchement des droits de la personne, des inégalités, de l’injustice, de la citoyenneté, de l’identité, de l’appartenance et du pouvoir de l’État.

Ses projets à long terme comprennent Nowhere People, Exiled To Nowhere et Seven Doors. Il est l’auteur de trois livres de photographie primés et son travail a été exposé dans plus de 40 villes du monde. M. Constantin documente les persécutions de la communauté rohingya depuis 18 ans. En 2021, une exposition majeure de son travail sur le génocide des Rohingyas, intitulée Birman’s Path To Genocide, a ouvert ses portes au U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum de Washington, D.C. Depuis quatre ans, il travaille avec les Rohingyas sur le projet Ek Khaale.

M. Constantin a obtenu son doctorat de l’Université Middlesex et, plus récemment, il a été boursier en début de carrière de l’Independent Social Research Foundation et de l’Université Queen Mary à Londres.

The annual Arctic Circle Assembly brings together governments, organizations, corporations, universities, think-tanks, environmental associations, Indigenous communities, citizens, and others for a comprehensive and democratic Arctic dialogue. The Assembly is the largest gathering on Arctic affairs. It is a place for international engagement, co-operation, and celebration.

Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada is organizing a panel at this forum: The View of the Canadian Arctic Through an Indo-Pacific Lens (October 18; 5:10 p.m.-6:05 p.m. IST). APF Canada Program Manager Dr. Hema Nadarajah is speaking on this panel. Dr. Nadarajah is also speaking on the panel Arctic Connected: Strategic Connections Between the Arctic and the Indo-Pacific (organized by the Ted Stevens Centre for Security Studies; October 19 10:05 a.m.-11:00 a.m. IST).

The Government of Canada released its long-awaited Indo-Pacific Strategy in November 2022. The direct geopolitical linkages between Asia and the Arctic are highlighted as the Indo-Pacific region sees the Arctic as a region of opportunity. As part of the strategy, the need for responsible and sustainable engagement in the Canadian Arctic was highlighted. 

The Canadian Arctic is in need for innovative energy, shipping, and telecommunications infrastructure. With the accelerating climate, biodiversity, and energy crises, collaborative efforts to ensure sustainable development of the North are increasingly critical. 

Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy, which affirms its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Arctic region and the health and safety of Indigenous Northern communities, presents an opportunity to address these issues while also deepening its engagement in Asia. It is also crucial that an integrated whole-of-government approach is taken to address these pressing issues. 

While the Arctic is geographically remote, many different Canadian interests are at stake, which are discussed separately in various strategies. Integrating the Arctic strands of these strategies is necessary for Canada to achieve its aims and provides opportunities for new avenues of engagement with Indo-Pacific partners. These panels will raise the importance of examining the Arctic through various strategies– the Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy, the updated Defence Policy, and the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework – each of which make references to the Arctic.

The Montreal International Security Summit was created in 2023 to address some of the most pressing geopolitical issues of our time. The aim of the annual summit is to convene Canadian and international experts to shed light on ongoing crises and to engage in constructive dialogue about the implications for global security and human rights.

Want to learn more about Climate Change in Singapore? Join the Critical Malaya Studies Initiative (York University) and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada as we bring together scholars and policy experts from Singapore to explore exciting opportunities for collaboration on climate change and sustainability advocacy in the region.

This discussion will dive into the pressing implications of climate change in Singapore such as the challenges of green transitions and heightened vulnerabilities for communities. 

Participants will engage in critical conversation with the panellists to understand what it means to build a sustainable future for Singapore and regionally, particularly focusing on transnational advocacy and alternative ways for knowledge mobilization. 

The discussion will also explore how domestic and international actors can support and learn from climate initiatives from Southeast Asia.

This international seminar is organized by the Taiwan WTO & RTA Center, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, and supported by Taiwan’s Office of Trade Negotiations (Executive Yaun), International Trade Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

Featuring presentations by representatives from CPTPP members Canada (including APF Canada President & CEO Jeff Nankivell), Japan, Australia, Peru, Mexico, it will bring together domestic and international industry, government, academia, and research sectors to explore the benefits of the CPTPP for the economic development and supply chain resilience of various economies in the context of changing geopolitical dynamics, as well as the significance of continued membership expansion.

The aim of this seminar in Taipei is to demonstrate Taiwan's proactive spirit of "Taiwan can contribute. Taiwan is ready," foster national consensus, and expand international support for its applications to accede to the trade bloc.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is currently one of the most advanced and liberalized trade agreements. With 12 member economies accounting for approximately 15% of global GDP and 5.9% of the world's population, the CPTPP plays a significant role in promoting global and Asia Pacific regional economic integration.

While India, in its 75-year existence as an independent state, has achieved much in fulfilling the dreams of Nehru and his successors to obtain major power status, why is this quest still unfinished? 

Along with the meteoric rise of China, there has been much interest in this question and in the emergence of India as a rising power. The rapidly developing U.S.-China rivalry has also given India an added importance in world politics with many viewing the country as a significant 'swing power' that can help balance China’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. Certainly, India’s current leadership, under Narendra Modi, and the Indian public, believe that the country is destined to be a global power.

In this APF Canada partnered event, Professor T.V. Paul will discuss the rise of India and what are the external and internal constraints in the pursuit of major power status that India must contend with. As Professor Paul will argue, the development of an inclusive, tolerant democracy that can utilize its most priced asset, the demographic dividend, will be essential for India to gain greater international status and influence in the 21st century.

About the Speaker

T.V. Paul is Distinguished James McGill Professor in the Department of Political Science at McGill University, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a Distinguished Fellow at Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He also served as the President of the International Studies Association for 2016-17 and is the Founding Director of the Global Research Network on Peaceful Change. 

Paul is the author or editor of 24 books and over 80 scholarly articles/book chapters in the fields of International Relations, International Security, and South Asia. His books include The Unfinished Quest: India’s Search for Major Power Status from Nehru to Modi, Restraining Great Powers: Soft Balancing from Empires to the Global Era, and The Warrior State: Pakistan in the Contemporary World. Paul currently serves as the editor of the Georgetown University Press book series: South Asia in World Affairs.
