Lisa Baiton
Over the course of her 34-year global career, Lisa Baiton has amassed a unique confluence of strategic perspectives on issues that are currently top-of-mind for management teams and boards, including: the impact effective enterprise management of geopolitical, political, regulatory, stakeholder and reputation risks have on competitive positioning, access to capital, market access, regulatory certainty, social license, and shareholder, stakeholder, and public support.
Lisa was appointed the 6th chief executive of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), the voice of Canada’s upstream oil and natural gas industry, effective May 2, 2022, with a mandate to reposition the organization as proactive, collaborative, and solution-oriented partner to continue providing Canadians, and the world, with secure and responsibly produced energy while progressively working towards achieving global climate commitments.
Lisa served an eleven-year tenure as an executive on CPP Investments’ Global Leadership Team through three CEO tenures and three distinct investment strategies and growth cycles: (1) passive to active; (2) active/direct and global; (3) deepening into emerging markets. From 2010-12, Lisa served as Vice President, Government & Stakeholder Relations, and from 2013-2021 as Managing Director & Head of Global Public Affairs. She built a new global function to match the Fund’s AUM growth and global investment footprint; responsibility for strategy development and program execution covering 56 countries and with comprehensive in-market programs in 26 countries (with significant value-creating outcomes globally); as well as leadership, talent, and succession management of teams in five global regions. She created a new risk management framework (embedded into the Fund’s Enterprise Risk Framework) specifically to identify, assess and mitigate geopolitical, political, and regulatory risks for individual transaction due diligence, ongoing asset management, and Fund/enterprise and transnational impact.
Lisa was Vice President & Practice Lead, Government Relations for Environics Communications (2004-2010), a North American public affairs firm where she provided executive-level counsel to highly regulated large multinational corporate clients across a broad range of sectors of the economy. She also worked for one of Canada's largest industry associations, the Canadian Bankers Association, and as a policy maker in three Canadian governments (Saskatchewan, Federal, Ontario) with oversight for the development and implementation of cornerstone legislative and regulatory priorities.
Lisa has a BA in Political Science (University of Saskatchewan), an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management (Northwestern University) and Schulich School of Business (York University), with global electives completed at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology.
Lisa has an Institute of Corporate Directors ICD.D certification (University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management). She has served 20+ years on various boards of directors including: Energy Safety Canada; The Fields Institute; Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (Mitacs Inc.); Canada-India Business Council; Canada-China Business Council; Canadian Centre for Diversity; Empire Club of Canada; and Casey House Hospice. She is a Senior Leader on the Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN); and an invited member of the International Women's Forum (IWF). She has served on the C.D. Howe Institute International Economic Policy Council and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Advisory Group.
