VANCOUVER, BC – October 19, 2022 – The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is pleased to announce its two John H. McArthur Research Fellowship recipients for 2022-23.
Following the success of the John H. McArthur Distinguished Fellowship, the John H. McArthur Research Fellowship was launched in 2021 to provide opportunities for exceptional, mid-career scholars who are working on programs and research areas with direct relevance to Canada and Canada’s interests in Asia.
The 2022-23 Research Fellows are:
- Fiona Cunningham is an assistant professor, faculty fellow, and faculty affiliate at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests lie at the intersection of technology and conflict, with an empirical focus on China and has been featured in The New York Times, The Economist, International Security, Security Studies, The Texas National Security Review, and The Washington Quarterly. Dr. Cunningham’s current book project explains China’s distinctive choice to rely on information-age weapons as substitutes for nuclear threats or conventional victory in the post–Cold War era.
- Oriana Skylar Mastro is a center fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and her research focuses on Chinese military and security policy, Asia Pacific security issues, war termination, and coercive diplomacy. She has published widely, including in The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, the International Studies Review, the Journal of Strategic Studies, and The Washington Quarterly. Dr. Mastro completed her Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University in 2013 and has since held fellowships at the Council on Foreign Relations, Georgetown University, and the American Enterprise Institute, where she currently serves as a non-resident senior fellow.
The John H. McArthur Distinguished Fellowship is an initiative established by APF Canada to honour John H. McArthur, a world-renowned Canadian business educator and former Chair of the APF Canada Board of Directors. Dr. McArthur, who passed away August 20, 2019, was a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and Dean Emeritus at Harvard Business School.
Supported by the creation of a $2-million fund and a growing number of generous donors, the Fellowship is awarded to an accomplished global thought leader who will elevate the work of the Foundation through public engagement.
