In this episode of Asia Pacific Conversations, Justin Bassi, Executive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, an independent, non-partisan think-tank based in Canberra, joins the Foundation’s Vice-President Research & Strategy Vina Nadjibulla for a wide-ranging conversation. Their discussion, recorded on May 7, touches on the outcome and impact of U.S. President Donald Trump on Australia’s May 3 federal election, Bassi’s take on Trump’s first 100 days in office and what his security and defence signals mean for Australia in the context of the broader Indo-Pacific, Australia’s approach to China and India in this time of global uncertainty, and what priorities Canberra is likely to pursue with Washington and across the region in this new term for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
An expert in security strategy, foreign policy, and international relations, Justin Bassi is the former Chief of Staff to Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women. Prior to that, he was Cyber Intelligence Mission Manager at the Office of National Intelligence where he led the integration of cybersecurity and critical technologies across Australia’s national intelligence community and was the National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, leading the team advising the PM and Cabinet on Australia’s national security, defence and international relations.
